Most people will understand that at nighttime, we need some sort of light to guide us.

But in this passage Jesus is actually symbolising “day” as knowledge of God’s will.

That is because when we move ahead in darkness, we will be likely to stumble.

Just like when people do not have a relationship with Christ, they remain in darkness and therefore always end up hurting themselves because they cannot truly see where they are going.
