Submitting to Marriage

This photo was taken in 2007 at our engagement shoot

So much has happened since then, with an array of emotions, but we have been on the ride of our lives, together

I had a warped sense of what marriage truly meant, because Kieren and I weren’t raised in Christian homes. Therefore, when I read words like ”submit to my husband” in the Bible, honestly, my blood boiled because I always felt oppressed growing up, and therefore I wanted a voice. I wanted to be right. I wanted to make the decisions

Yet, over the years, God has been faithful to walk with me, and even Kieren and I, regarding what marriage looks like within the context of Christianity, and from this, we have discovered so much more about each other and even God

The intentional roles of husband and wife are a beautiful partnership that is entwined with God, and with God at the very centre of our relationship, love is the outworking of it all

I did not realise that submission does not mean that we became a ”doormat” to each other, but more, in marriage, a husband and wife are significant within God’s plan for humanity

In marriage, we both submit to God, and that means that we become willing to obey His commands, because for the wife, this means willingly following her husband’s leadership, in Christ, and for the husband, it means putting aside his interests to care for his wife

These teachings have been so distorted by what Paul shared to the Ephesians, and unfortunately for many years, I was simply disregarding these passages and refused to follow these Scriptures as well

Friends, marriage is not a practical necessity or a cure for lust, but a beautiful picture of the relationship between Christ and His church. It’s a holy union, a living symbol, and as we see from Christ, a loving relationship needs tender, self-sacrificing care

“For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.”
