The way God wants us to love is directed outwards towards others, not inwards towards ourselves. It is utterly unselfish.
This kind of love goes against our natural inclinations, but God can help us to set aside our own desires and instincts so that eventually, we can love while expecting nothing in return.
That is why, the more we seek Christ, the more love we will show to others.
