What Perfection Looks Like

David had just watched God deliver him from his enemies before penning Psalm 18 and the first words from this Psalm reads:

I love you, Lord

Psalm 18:1

To love someone would (usually) be seen as being able to trust them completely. I can hear the relief and gratitude in David’s words as he starts to write down his thoughts within this Psalm, reflecting and reciting what he had just witnessed

It’s always easier to give our praise after an event has occurred. To be filled with gratitude after our lives have, maybe, passed before our eyes, or where we have witnessed God perform a miracle

Yet, by now, David in his lifetime, up until this point, had grown to know God. He was anointed to be the next King, and he had been on the run from Saul for around twenty years of his life. Therefore, David had to learn to trust God – in His perfect timing; in His perfect wisdom; and in His perfect ways

How many times have we tried things in our strength, only to cry out for God after that to rescue us? For myself, I have lost count, but slowly, over time, as my relationship grew with the LORD, I have come to understand that I didn’t need to try and do things on my own, but to simply go to the One who knows and understands me more than I can ever comprehend

If God knows our most intricate being, why do we need to trust anyone else in those moments?

Friends, I want to encourage us this morning that we love a God who is flawless, and so, His ways are not ours, and therefore, in His infinite wisdom, He does protect and guide us in the way He sees fit. Sometimes, our circumstances might not turn out the way we had hoped, but let’s always want to be shielded by God – who is victorious – than by anything else that this world can offer

“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.”
