This is a well known verse in Song of Songs regarding a Husband and Wife but there is so much goodness in this piece of scripture, that I feel we can take from it as well.
Banners within the twelve tribes of Israel were used to symbolise which house the people were under as it identified and unified that particular group. Similarly, when Moses called God, Yahweh-Nisi, (Exodus 17:15-16) it meant, “The Lord is my Banner.” This was a way of identifying themselves as the unified followers of The Lord. I love the picture I get when I think of The Lord as our Banner, because He is the One under whom we all unite.
God is our Savior. We are rescued by Him and identified through Him but ultimately, in 1 John 4:7-8, it tells us that God is love. In other words, love is the fundamental characteristic of who God is. Everything God does is influenced by His love and that is why I love this scripture because it reminds me that our human understanding of love is flawed, weak, and incomplete.
I therefore need to look to Jesus because the better I understand that I am covered by His banner of true love and protection in my life; then I will know without question that I am His.
